Lakeshore, Forest & Bird

This half day walk is an easy stroll, through a unique microclimate and experience nature at its best.

Lakeshore

The best of native flora and bird-life, with magnificent lake and mountain views in an area with its own micro-climate; plants are protected from the elements so species are much larger than elsewhere. Native birds are readily seen and heard. You’ll be introduced to an array of edible and medicinal plants used by Maori and European settlers on this fun half day walk.

The 'Lakeshore Forest and Bird' guided walk is a unique nature interpretative experience. Taken at a leisurely pace through native beech forest, with morning or afternoon tea/coffee on the lake-shore where you stop and enjoy views across the lake to The Remarkables and Cecil Peak. Before heading back through the red beech stand to your transport and Queenstown.

The walk begins in native shrub and beech forest, and the track leads down through the forest to the edge Lake Wakatipu. Great views can be had looking out through the trees and over the water to the mountains beyond.

The track is good but uneven and winds around the lake shore with the option of a steeper climb to a lookout with magnificent views in all directions.

Departures are at 8.00am and 1.30pm. We will pick you up from your Queenstown accommodation. A full commentary is given and photo stops made while traveling the short distance by road to the start of this walk.

Miner's Forest Retreat

Half day pioneering with stunning lake and mountain views, only minutes from Queenstown.

GWNZ Miners Forest RetreatIn the late 19th century, a treasure house of gold was first found in the streams and hills around Lake Wakatipu, and like a magnet the discovery brought thousands to the area from all over the world. They found a place as rich in natural splendor as it was in precious metals and set about trying to master the elements in their quest for wealth.

The loop track we walk is there for a reason; as recently as the 1860s miners used it for access to claims and workings. The men and women of those hard-working, hard-living days are gone now, but the long-abandoned remains of their lives and work have become as much a part of the region's history as the scenery they've blended into.

This half day guided walk begins in native Beech forest, and the track climbs through the forest and grassy meadows following a clear mountain stream. You’ll need a reasonable level of fitness to walk an ascending path that follows a sparklingly clear mountain brook. Through grassy meadows amidst towering peaks, you’ll encounter old campsites, stone shacks and miners’ water races and tailings. Your guide is well versed in the history, geology and engineering feats of the region and armed with a quiver of anecdotes from the days of gold- fever.

Native bird life still thrives here and their inquisitive nature means you’ll have first-hand meetings with a wide range of curious alpine species.

A small mountain lake nestles hundreds of meters below as you enjoy a welcome refreshment stop with tea, coffee and biscuits in one of the most picturesque impromptu picnic spots in the world. Fortified, the descent follows the ridge-line around the valley, back towards the larger Lake Wakatipu, with splendid views all the way to the bottom and a comfortable, short ride back to Queenstown.
