In the late 18th century a treasure house of gold was first found in the streams and hills around Lake Wakatipu, and like a magnet the discovery brought thousands to the area from all over the world.  They found a place as rich in natural splendor as it was in precious metals and set about trying to master the elements in their quest for wealth.

The loop track we walk is there for a reason; as recently as the 1860s miners used it for access to claims and workings. The men and women of those hard-working, hard-living days are gone now, but the long-abandoned remains of their lives and work have become as much a part of the region's history as the scenery they've blended into.

This half-day guided walk begins in native Beech forest, and the track climbs through the forest and grassy meadows following a clear mountain stream. You’ll need a reasonable level of fitness to walk an ascending path that follows a sparklingly clear mountain brook. Through grassy meadows amidst towering peaks, you’ll encounter old campsites, stone shacks and miners’ water races and tailings. Your guide is well versed in the history, geology and engineering feats of the region and armed with a quiver of anecdotes from the days of gold- fever.

Native bird life still thrives here and their inquisitive nature means you’ll have first-hand meetings with a wide range of curious alpine species.

A small mountain lake nestles hundreds of meters below as you enjoy a welcome refreshment stop with tea, coffee and biscuits in one of the most picturesque impromptu picnic spots in the world.  Fortified, the descent follows the ridge-line around the valley, back towards the larger Lake Wakatipu, with splendid views all the way to the bottom and a comfortable, short  ride back to Queenstown.
